This evening’s programme spans three centuries of chamber music, showcasing the oboe and strings in works of elegance, innovation, and emotional depth.
Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F major, K.370, composed in 1781 for virtuoso oboist Friedrich Ramm, sparkles with charm and wit. The oboe sings with operatic flair above the string trio, especially in the lyrical Adagio, while the spirited Rondeau finale playfully tests the soloist’s agility with leaps and ornamentation.
Written when he was just 18, Britten’s Phantasy Quartet, Op. 2, already reveals a unique compositional voice. Structured as a single-movement arch, it opens and closes with a haunting march. The inner sections shift between pastoral calm and angular energy, reflecting both English tradition and modernist touches. The piece showcases the oboe’s expressive range, from plaintive song to biting sarcasm.
Beethoven’s String Trio in G major, Op. 9 No. 1, marks a high point in his early chamber writing. More than a precursor to his string quartets, the trio reveals his growing mastery of form and drama. Its four movements blend elegance with invention, especially in the stormy minuet and luminous slow movement.
Together, these works offer a vibrant journey through classical clarity, youthful imagination, and Beethovenian power.
